What to Look for in a Personal Injury Lawyer

Injured in a Car Accident?
How Do You Pick the Right Las Vegas Personal Injury Lawyer?

After suffering an injury in a motor vehicle accident caused by the other driver's negligence, you will find plenty of law firms you can go to for help. Each one offers something different. So how do you know who to hire to represent you?

At Harris & Harris Lawyers, we receive phone calls every day from people who tell us they are shopping around for the right Las Vegas personal injury lawyer. It is OK to shop around. It is important that you feel comfortable with your lawyer. You will be working together for many months, until your case is resolved. But when everything else looks comparable between law firms, there are some important factors you should keep in mind when making your decision.

The right style of communication: Some law firms say they will handle everything, and then the client never hears from them again until it is time to accept a settlement offer. Make sure your lawyer is willing to respond quickly. You need to know what is going on with your case and you will want to stay in close contact with your lawyer. Be sure to ask if you will be working with the same attorney throughout your case and make sure you will not be referred to another law firm.

The right kind of client service: Pay attention to how you are treated from the first time you call or walk through the office door. First impressions make a difference. If the receptionist and paralegal treat you with respect and concern for your personal injury matter, it is a good sign that your attorney will treat you with respect throughout your case. Ask questions about correspondence and reports. If any court fees or a retainer is required, make sure you are clear about how you will be billed and how the records will be kept as your case progresses.

The right kind of experience: Nearly all attorneys will say they have experience. Make sure the lawyer you hire has experience successfully handling cases very similar to yours. When you are seeking full and fair compensation for your medical bills and losses, that is not the right time for your lawyer to make mistakes or get over the learning curve. Ask to see a record of results in similar cases.

The right kind of results: Attorneys who push their clients to accept a quick settlement may claim a "successful record," but it doesn't mean they are the right attorney for your case. The truth is, most car accident injury claims settle out of court. But settling for $50,000 when the injured person will need $500,000 to cover a lifetime of costs isn't a success for the client. Look at the case history and discuss how your case will progress. Make sure your attorney is concerned about your personal well-being and long-term needs, not just the immediate settlement that might be available.
